Ever heard that song from the Fray, 'You Found Me'?
I found God on the corner of 1st and Armistad
Where the West was all but won
All alone, smoking his last cigarette
I said "Where you been" he said "Ask anything."
Well aside from the fact that I do need to smoke my last cigarette (The day will come, I swear!), I just had one of those moments that cause you to stop and think. I was at work, smoking outside by myself and a lady came by and asked me for a cigarette. She looked homeless and harmless, so I gave her one. She proceeded to ask if she could sit and smoke with me. We had a conversation, which was pretty much small talk. She's homeless, no job, out tonight because it was a beautiful night. She was going to go to the Julian Center, but she didn't want to waste the night and they have a 10pm curfew. She asked me about my life, where I work, was I married. We both went on our way and I told her to stay safe. All in all, not a very spectacular conversation,
BUT......
I love those moments that make you stop and be grateful for what you have.
I wanted to run inside and give her my lunch, but I didn't. It wasn't very portable, and she probably wouldn't have waited. On my way in, I said a little prayer for her and then gave thanks for all my fortune. Some days you forget, you know. You get caught up in the daily grind and forget how lucky you are to have the things you have. I probably can't list all the things I am grateful for, but these are the few that came to mind:
Jack and Evelyn- Leland
- Our families
- Our friends
- Our health
- Our jobs
- A roof over our heads
- Food on the table
I know these are just the basics and I really am grateful for so much more in my life, but still.................... We have so much, some people have so little or nothing at all. So maybe I didn't "find God" like in the song, but I definately found a reminder of how blessed I am, which is pretty darn close! Just a random thoughts post I wanted to share.
Now go out and be grateful!
